About The Lend-A-Hand Center
The Lend-A-Hand Center is a private, nonprofit community service organization located on a farm in southeastern Kentucky off the Cumberland Gap Parkway between the cities of Barbourville and Pineville. The Center began in 1958 as a result of a dream of Peggy Kemner, a nurse-midwife from Pennsylvania and Irma Gall, a school teacher and farmer from Indiana. Both women wanted to work with the people along Stinking Creek in Knox County, Kentucky, by utilizing good farming techniques, by the provision of medical services, by providing Sunday school and Day Camp programs for children in the area and by setting an example of Christian service and cooperation with one another.

Our campus consists of 500 acres of forest and farmland. Our main Center building was built in the 1960s and houses living quarters, a large kitchen and dining area, and volunteer space. The Center is a working farm with livestock, gardens, and a large stone barn and several outbuildings.

Volunteers
For over 6 decades volunteers have been a vital part of the work of the Lend-A-Hand Center. We take work groups, short-term volunteers, and long-term volunteers.

Charges
The standard rate for work groups for a week of activities at the Lend-A-Hand Center is $275 per person. For shorter periods, $40 per night per person. These funds cover a variety of costs including: lodging, overhead, and materials.

Lend-A-Hand Center Provides

• Provide lodging- beds, linens, towels, bathroom facilities, Wi-Fi internet access
• Provide construction materials, tools, and project supplies (work groups may also bring their own)
• Provide use of kitchen area and dining facilities
• May provide some snacks and meals in coordination with the work group
• Plan and coordinate daily schedule and service activities on the Center grounds and in the community
• Provide a LAH staff leader to coordinate the trip and provide a point of contact for leaders
• Suggest evening activities and fun things to do during the trip

Work Groups will Provide

• Provide their own meals during the service trip
• Provide their own transportation to the Center and around the community & own insurance
