Ways to Give

Give Appreciated Stock

Giving stock that has grown in value is one of the most tax-efficient ways to support Together For Hope. When you give shares you have held for more than a year, you can generally deduct their full market value and avoid capital gains tax on the growth.

Why give this way

How to make your gift

  1. Email natalie@tfhope.org for our transfer instructions.
  2. Ask your broker or financial advisor to transfer the shares electronically to Together For Hope’s account. Please don’t sell the shares first; selling them yourself creates the capital gains tax this gift avoids.
  3. Let us know your gift is coming. Email natalie@tfhope.org with your name, mailing address, the name of the stock, the number of shares, the expected transfer date, and whether you would like it to support a specific region.

Good to know

  • Shares must reach our account by December 31 to count for this tax year. Transfers can take a week or more, especially near year-end, so please start early.
  • For tax purposes, the value of your gift is generally based on the share price on the day the shares arrive in our account.
  • Shares held for one year or less don’t receive the same treatment; the deduction is generally limited to what you paid.
  • If a stock has lost value, consider selling it yourself and giving the cash. That way you can claim the loss on your taxes.
  • Mutual funds and privately held stock take longer to transfer and may need approval first. Please contact us before starting one of these gifts.
